Field Scale Canola Straight Harvest Trials.

In 2006, there are two proposed biodiesel plants to be built in North Dakota. Once built, there will be a need to double the canola acres in the state. In North Dakota, canola harvest is preceded by swathing. If canola could be successfully straight combined canola acres would increase significantly. In 2004 and 2005, field scale canola harvest trials were conducted in Rugby and Langdon, North Dakota. The objectives were to evaluate straight combining canola with and without Spodnam to swathing. Spodnam is a polymer coating that has been developed to reduce the pod shattering of canola. Spodnam is applied to early maturing pods to reduce or delay expansion and spliting of the drying pod. Straight combined yields tended to be higher than the swathed treatments two of the three location years. Straight combined treatments had significantly lower green seed content compared to the swathtreatments at both locations in 2005. There was no difference in yield with the straight combining treatments with and without Spodnam.
