Using Writing to Enhance Learning in Turf Courses.

Steven J. Keeley, Kansas State University, 2021 Throckmorton Hall, Manhattan, KS 66506-5506

Skill in written communication is essential for turfgrass graduates, but writing assignments are, at best, a minor component of most turfgrass courses. Turfgrass students will benefit from assignments that afford them opportunities to practice and improve their writing within the context of turfgrass science. Such assignments may include persuasive or expository essays, or research reviews. Examples of specific assignments used in an upper-level turf course will be presented. Learning from such assignments will be limited unless meaningful feedback is received and applied. Techniques to give such feedback and provide opportunities for application will be discussed.
