Natural cosmetics production has increased in the last years. Cochineal insect has been used in some cosmetics; however its manufacture has not been exploited by producers. In Mexico, colorized extract has limited its application to stain natural fabrics, without to exploit all benefits can be earned from cochineal production. Some advantages to use it in cosmetics are reduction on allergic reactions and excellent UV protection. Therefore, professors from University of Guanajuato are looking for alternative use of cochineal to improve farmers' conditions in arid zones. Since consumers decided to use or no a product, this work was focus to establish main characteristics that a consumer is looking in a lipstick. In addition a comparison among commercial products and cochineal lipstick was done. Lipsticks were elaborated according to a previous study done at the University. A formulary was applied to 50 women between 16 and 25 years old. Also, four lipsticks were used as testers: two commercial and two made at our laboratory. It was found that 59 % of women preferred lipsticks with light colors and produced a glitter effect on the lips. They had preference for glitter lipsticks because they create a humectant sensation and avoid dryness on lips. 64 % individuals could not distingue between commercial product and laboratory product. Results showed that laboratory product will be well accepted on the market. Also, estimate profits on lipsticks manufacture showed that cochineal producers will have better incomes. This work contributes to find alternative use to cochineal insect in arid zones in Mexico and in addition to improve economical conditions of small cultivators.
