Canola acres have fallen from 1.5 million acres in 2001 to 800,000 acres in 2005. The interest in canola for biodiesel is very strong in North Dakota. In 2007, Archur Daniels Midland (ADM) will open a biodiesel facility capable of producing 85 million gallons of biodiesel. There are 3 additional biodiesel plants proposed in North Dakota and Minnesota that will produce over 200 million gallons of biodiesel. This will increase the demand for canola. It is estimated that 2.5 to 3.0 million acres of canola will be needed by 2008 just to supply the biodiesel needs. If proven that canola could be successfully straight combined this could increase canola acres substantially.
