Accurately measuring water fluxes in the vadose zone is a formidable challenge. Heat pulse methods for measuring water flux may allow researchers to overcome this challenge in some settings. The heat pulse ratio method is a relatively simple approach that has been shown to be effective in saturated sand. Our objective is to further develop the ratio method to facilitate accurate measurements in unsaturated soil and finer textured soil. New theory and new data towards this end will be presented.
