Particle Size Distribution of Culturally Amended Soils in Western Scotland.

Historic agriculture in western Scotland required considerable amendments to reduce acidity and increase fertility. Amendment sources included manure, shell sand, turf, and peat that altered field soil textures. Comparison of laser scattering particle size distributions (PSD) through relict field profiles will be presented and differences between cultural epipedons and underlying parent material compared. Comparison will also be made with non-cultivated areas. Interpretation of laser PSD data must be tempered with understanding of the method in cases of non-ideal particle morphology as exists in the study areas micaceous sands. It is shown that laser PSD can produce consistent, meaningful results and can be used for detailed analysis of historically amended soils.
