Sustainable Pasture Management in the Delmarva Peninsula: The Experience of Specialists in Training.

Participation in internships and research experiences has proven to be a successful learning tool and a profitable means for becoming aware of our future work environments in agriculture related fields. Students from Delaware State University and the University of Delaware were invited by the USDA-NRCS to participate in a statewide project to collect, summarize, and analyze information concerning pasture management and prescribed grazing practices in the DelMarva area. Additionally, we had the opportunity to participate in research experiences where several pasture species and cultivars were tested for their adaptability to Delaware soil and climatic conditions. Finally, we participated in workshops and training sessions for conservation agents and DelMarva farmers. All of this was accomplished with the ultimate goals of creating a Prescribed Grazing Standard for the state of Delaware and encouraging area farmers to adopt it.
