One hundred twenty-seven recombinant inbred lines from a cross between a drought tolerant spring wheat (Dharwar Dry) and a moderately susceptible spring wheat (Sitta) were used to assay for QTL associated with tolerance to post-anthesis drought stress. Previous research using microsatellite markers identified a QTL for drought tolerance on chromosome 4AL in this population. However, low levels of polymorphism prevented a comprehensive scan of the entire genome. In this research, AFLPs were used to increase the marker density for this population. A single marker analysis approach was used as a first step to identify additional markers putatively associated with tolerance to drought. The results and their potential value for marker assisted selection are discussed.
